​BEGINNERS:

Before any lessons can commence, you must have a Driver's Learning Permit. To obtain this permit, you must complete a Theory Test. Go to  www.theorytest.ie  for further information.  Please click on the dtt book icon to find your nearest Driver Theory Test Centre location Alternatively, you can purchase The Theory Test Book and Cd, (4th Addition recommended) at any newsagent or book shop.

You will need to purchase the 'Rules of the Road' manual. These are in stock at most book shops. Alternatively, you can visit www.rulesoftheroad.ie
 to download the manual and acquire relevant information. Please click on Rules of the Road icon to view.

LEARNER'S DRIVING PERMIT:

On successful completion of the Theory Test you will receive a receipt which will enable you to apply for the Learner's Driving Permit. Application forms can be collected at your local National Driving Licence Service (NDLS) Centre, Garda Station, Driving Test Centre or Driver Theory Test Centre.  Application forms can also be downloaded from  www.ndls.ie     Please click on the NDLS icon to find your nearest NDLS Centre.

Driving tuition cannot commence without a valid Learner's Driving Permit. If a previous Permit has expired for five years or more, you must reapply for the Theory Test in order to be reissued a new Learner's Driving Permit. ​ If your Permit has expired within this time, you can reapply for a new Permit. ​DRIVING LESSONS:

Driving lessons with Roy are professionally implemented to suit individual needs and level of confidence and ability. Any driving experience you may already have is taken into account.

ESSENTIAL DRIVER TRAINING (EDT):

 EDT is an official mandatory Driving Training Course designed to teach  essential driving skills. Please click on the EDT Information icon to view the booklet or go to  www.rsa.ie    for further details.  There are twelve Essential Driving Lessons throughout the EDT Course:
  1. Car controls and safety checks
  2. Correct positioning
  3. Changing direction
  4. Progression management
  5. Correct positioning
  6. Anticipation and reaction
  7. Sharing the road
  8. Driving safely through traffic
  9. Changing direction (more complex situations)      
  10. Speed management
  11. Driving calmly
  12. Night driving

​EDT Lessons are incorporated into a Personal Lesson Plan.   Each stage of the EDT Course is  broken down into Beginner, Intermediate, and Competent phases for the Learner. According to an individual's ability, further tuition may be required to reach completion of some EDT Lessons. The EDT syllabus was designed to teach  fundamental driving skills   which prepares the Learner for further essential tuition needed to be test ready. THE LEARNER LOGBOOK:

The EDT Logbook is used as an official record of the ongoing progress throughout your Lesson Plan. It will be updated, stamped and signed by Roy according to your successful completion of each stage of the EDT course. You will not be permitted to apply for a driving test without a fully processed Logbook. The EDT Logbook will be supplied to you at the beginning of the Course. Throughout your Lesson Plan, each lesson has particular objectives. To prepare for each lesson Roy will supply all necessary instruction for practice and theory purposes according to your ability and progression. Also, for the preparation of each EDT lesson the study of the EDT Course Syllabus is essential and will be supplied by Roy at the beginning of the Course. INTERMEDIATE LEARNERS:

You may wish to take a refresher driving course to improve your skills and prepare for a driving test. 

Roy will guide and prepare you from whatever stage of driving you may be at, to test standard.  When your driving skills have reached full potential, you can apply for a driving test. Roy will provide you with a Driving Test Application Form or you can obtain one from your local NDLS Centre, Garda Station, Driving Test Centre or Driver Theory Test Centre. PRE-TEST LESSONS:

Pre-test lessons are structured to determine your driving ability and knowledge and to prepare for the Driving Test situation. The pre-test program consists of:
  • Definition of the Driving Test process
  • Assessment of driving ability
  • Assessment of knowledge and practical preparation
  • Manoeuvre lessons – e.g. reversing around corners
  • Practical coverage of Driving Test Routes/Situations
  • Preparation  of Car for testing
  • Review of Official Documentation/Discs

Roy will execute these lessons in areas close to the test centres with an aim to familiarise you with the routes and situations that may occur with a Driving Examiner.

Roy caters for Pre-testing in the following areas:
  • Finglas Test Centre
  • Raheny Test Centre​

Roy will recommend a pre-test lesson on the day of your driving test. This will help you to focus, stay calm and give some beneficial fine tuning and reminders.  Your driving skills must be at a competent, pretest level and approved by Roy Giffin in order to hire the Atlas Driving School car for your test.

TEST REQUIREMENTS:

  • Driving ability must be at a competent level.
  • Completion an EDT course. (within the last five years).
  • To have at least six months driving experience
  • To supply a processed, stamped and signed EDT logbook.
  • To have complete knowledge of 'The Rules of the Road'.
  • To arrive at the test center 15 minutes before your test.
  • Relevant documentation must be presented on arrival.
  • L Plates clearly displayed on car.
  • Valid Tax and Insurance Discs clearly displayed on car.
  • Valid NCT Disc, (if applicable) clearly displayed on car.
  • A clean car in good road worthy condition.
  • Your tyres should be up to legal standard requirements​​​​

When your car is four years old or over, it will require National Car Testing Services (NCTS) Approval. Please click the NCTS icon for further information or telephone 01 4135996 or go to  www.ncts.ie ​

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE DRIVING TEST CENTRE:

On arrival you should be well prepared and confident.
Your Personal Lesson Plan will have provided you with every possible chance of passing your test and becoming a safe and confident driver for the future.

Ensure you have up to date relevant documentation and discs, including you appointment letter (not always required).

THE THEORY TEST:

The Examiner will call you into the examination area and request  the following:
  • Learner's Permit
  • Vehicle registration number. (Occasionally)
  • A signed confirmation that you are insured to drive the car and that it is road worthy
  • Your knowledge of   the rules of the road
  • Your  knowledge of what road signs mean when shown to you.​

THE PRACTICAL TEST:

When you both go to your car. You will be asked to open the bonnet and answer some basic questions about the engine.

Roy will have prepared you for this situation in your Pre-test lessons.

​Next you will be asked to sit into the car whilst the Examiner checks the brake lights, indicators, tyres and Tax, Insurance and NCT discs (where applicable).

The Examiner will then sit in the passenger seat and ask simple questions about the internal controls.

THE DRIVING TEST:

When you are asked to proceed, make sure that it is safe to do so by checking mirrors and blind spots. The driving test includes:
  • Moving off, including hill starts
  • Driving in traffic
  • Stopping and parking
  • Turning left and right onto major and minor roads
  • Speed and progress
  • Road position
  • Overtaking and passing
  • Anticipation and observation
  • Use of mirrors and signals
  • Compliance with traffic lights, road signs and markings
  • Use of the vehicle controls
  • Hand signals
  • Emergency Stop
  • Turnabout
  • Reverse around a corner​​​

​On completion of the test you will be asked to proceed into the office when you will be given your test results.

WHEN YOU PASS THE DRIVING TEST:

After passing your test, the Examiner will issue you with a Certificate of Competency, which you can then exchange for your Full Driving Licence at your local NDLS Centre. Please click on Certificate icon for further details.

If the Certificate is not submitted to the NDLS Centre within two years of the date of issue, you will be required to re-sit and pass the test to obtain a Full Driving Licence.

If you lose your certificate, send a Lost Certificate of Competency Form to : RSA Driver Testing Section, Moy Valley Business Park, Primrose Hill,  Ballina, Co. Mayo and you will be issued with a duplicate. Garda certification of lost certificate is required. Please click on the RSA icon to view a Lost Certificate of Competency Form. 

N-plates must be displayed on your car or any other car that you are insured to drive for a period of two years from when you received your Driver's Licence. Please click on car icon to view details.
